Buhler and Co is an antipodean inspired café located in the heart of Walthamstow. Founded by sisters Meg and Rosie Buhler the establishment opened six months ago and offers vegetarian and vegan cuisine from around the globe.
Having grown up in New Zealand where there is a big cafe culture the pair were keen to bring a little slice of this action to London. Their aim is to show the people of the capital that vegetarian food can be both tasty and creative.
When asked how they made the decision to take the step to starting the business, Rosie said:
“We had been discussing it for ages and then one day we just said we need to stop talking about it and get on with doing it”.
It was at this stage that the Buhlers contacted Enterprise for London and were introduced to their business advisor, Peng Seng Ong.
“We really needed some help with our business plan, we knew that we were going to need to access finance in order to fund the business, so we had to make sure our proposition was as good as it could be”.
Enterprise for London were able to support the pair to successfully apply for funding from the government Start up Loans Company which helped to cover their start-up costs and the lease on their premises.
Despite being in its infancy the business has already been recognised as a leading cafe in their niche and was recently named one of the top 25 vegetarian restaurants in the UK by the Times on Sunday.
With rooms for hire, great food and a warm and friendly atmosphere the business is quickly establishing itself as Walthamstow’s most trendy cafés. However, the sisters are not resting on their laurels and plans are afoot to extend opening hours in to the evenings in 2017.
“It has been a great six months, but not without its challenges. The biggest test to date has been getting our staffing structure correct, we feel like we have managed to get over that hurdle now… but we’re always getting busier.
“Being named in The Dish magazines top 25 vegetarian restaurants was a massive highlight and we have been really fortunate to have some great people around us. Our good friend, Egil Johansen, who owns The Kenton in Hommerton has been a big influence, he is so generous with his time and support.
“The help and advice we have received has been invaluable. In short, we would not have been able to do it without the support of Enterprise for London”.
